Nail surgery

Toenail surgery, known as a partial nail avulsion, is permanent correction of an ingrowing toenail. It is an appropriate choice for those who have a chronic ingrowing nail, where other solutions have been unsuccessful, and where the podiatrist has assessed and deemed that it would be the most appropriate solution in your individual case.

Under sterile, surgical conditions a local anaesthetic is administered to the toe, the problematic nail portion is then removed and a solution is applied that destroys the cells responsible for nail growth. Simple paracetamol is advised for pain relief following the procedure, however many patients report no pain whatsoever.

There is minimal downtime from the surgery. Following the procedure you will be required to rest at home with your foot elevated, but following this most people are able to return to school or work.

You will be given clear instructions for at home care of the toe, typically this will need to be done for 3-6 weeks. You will be required to attend the clinic for brief checkup appointments over this period so that your podiatrist can ensure the toe is healing as expected.

If you feel that nail surgery may be appropriate for you, please make a pre-op 30min appointment (as an initial or subsequent appointment in our online bookings) with our surgical podiatrist Farida Yawary.
