Ingrown toe nail care

An ingrowing toenail (onychocryptosis) is a condition where the edge of the toenail is growing into the surrounding skin. It is usually painful, with redness and swelling of the surrounding tissue, and infection with signs of pus and exudate is common.

There are many causes including incorrect cutting of the nail, ripping/tearing the nail (common in boys), tight footwear, family history, trauma (such as stubbing the toe), and certain sports (such as soccer) that put repeated pressure on the toes are more likely to bring on ingrowing nails.

Treatment is dependent on the cause and severity; however our podiatrists can often provide you relief from this painful condition after a single consultation.

Our podiatrists are trained in the pain-free nail correction system, Onyfix. We can assess and then advise if this in an appropriate option for you.

We also offer nail surgery for total and permanent removal of the offending nail portion. Provided right here in clinic and with minimal down time, this is the best solution for chronic ingrowing toenails.
